Last week took place in Madrid the II Symposium: Articulating Sport 2022 organized by Osteoarthritis Foundation International - OAFIFoundation, Fundación Atlético de Madrid and the Spanish Olympic Committee - COE.
Experts, medical professionals, physiotherapists and renowned athletes took part in the event, explaining the benefits of good sports practice, emphasising the importance of practising physical exercise in optimal conditions and taking care of the joints to give them a long, active and quality life.
The meeting was not only aimed at professional athletes, but also at amateurs, in an attempt to bring health improvement to the general public, as in most cases people do not give much attention to joint problems. Osteoarthritis and early joint problems do not cause pain at the beginning and it is, when they start to suffer from them, that it is already too late in many cases. Chondro-protection has been the main theme of this event recommending to the attendees and experts that joint health starts with prevention.
One of the main themes of the Symposium was to conclude that the future in sport will be "tailor-made" nutrition and personalised medicine. The genetic factors of each person, the chosen sport practice, the lifestyle of each athlete and the environment of the sport practice are "sine qua non" conditions for the future in sport and joint health.
Some of the round tables offered data and explanations on the subject: "The intestine: the secret of sports performance" (Dr. Blanca Bermejo of Laboratorios Echevarne), "Preventomics: Personalised nutrition for athletes" (Dr. Biotza Gutiérrez of EURECAT), "Tennis, the importance of prevention control and nutritional aspects" (Ms. Gemma Bes of Rafa Nadal Academy and Dr. Ángel Ruiz Cotorro of Laboratorios Echevarne). Biotza Gutiérrez from EURECAT), "Tennis, the importance of controlling prevention and nutritional aspects" (Ms. Gemma Bes from Rafa Nadal Academy and Dr. Ángel Ruiz Cotorro from Clínica Mapfre) and "The digital revolution in sport" (Mr. Pablo Honrubia and Mr. Pablo Calatayud from iNuba).
Related to these presentations, Xavier Sàez, General Manager of Ümbrella Group, took part with his presentation: "Food Supplements in Sport: Are we doing well?
The presentation was organised by the organisation with the collaboration of Ricardo Aparicio, journalist and presenter specialising in health issues, as a debate in question and interview format to try to clarify the most important issues regarding the food supplements that athletes and "amateur" sportsmen and sportswomen habitually use.
The spontaneous questions from the audience further enriched this round table discussion, leading to a further, more extensive and detailed presentation due to its importance and the lack of time on a topic that is becoming increasingly important for sport.
Some of the questions to be highlighted among those presented were:
- "Is the future of nutrition "tailor-made"?
- "What is really important in Food Supplements?"
- "How is the shelf life of the Product established, and is there a safety margin with respect to the date indicated on the Product?
- "What kind of Food Supplements can we find in the market?"
- "What innovations can be found on the market? What are adaptogens or nootropics?
- "How can we prevent our Olympic athletes from testing positive for Food Supplements manufactured in other countries?"
- "How should efficacy studies be conducted in order to be useful for the medical team and the athlete?
The future of nutrition in sport is "tailor-made" and for this we must have as many tools as possible to measure, control and adapt to every need.
Chondroprotection in sport is a problem that acts silently and, when it appears with pain, it has a difficult solution, so it is necessary to prevent it so as not to have to cure it or offer solutions that are not always optimal and easy to adapt.
It was a pleasure for Ümbrella Group to participate with our expertise in Food Supplements in this important event and with experts and colleagues from the industry.
